Finding the words for what you need

An honest sentence is a place to begin.

EBONY REIGNReflection 03A moment to pause

A need can be real even when we are still learning how to express it. We may worry that asking will inconvenience someone, start an argument, or reveal more than we intended.

Clarity does not require a perfect speech. It can begin with naming the situation, describing its effect, and saying what would be helpful. It can also include a question: “How do you see it?”

Expression is not a guarantee of agreement. Another person has their own perspective and limits. But finding our words gives us an opportunity to be understood—and to learn from the response we receive.

It is also okay to take time. “I need to think about what I want to say” is a complete beginning.

What am I hoping another person understands? What is one honest sentence I could use to begin?
